पास्टरज्यू, तपाईंको वचन प्रचार कस्तो छ?

परमेश्वरीय सेवामा पास्टरीय बोलावट सबैभन्दा गहन बोलावट हो।  एउटा मानिसको जन्म देखि मृत्यु सम्मको यात्रामा पास्टरले उसलाई साथदिनुपर्दछ।  दुःख होस् या सुख, रात होस् या दिन, बेलानकुबेला पास्टरले आफ्नो सम्पूर्ण स्वार्थलाई बिर्सेर विश्वासीको सेवामा दौडिनुपर्दछ।  त्यति गर्दा पनि जस भन्दा अबजस नै उसको भागमा पर्दछ।  त्यसैकारण स्वर्गीय बोलावटबिना कोही पास्टरीय सेवामा आएको थियो भने केही वर्षमै झोलीझाम्टी बोकेर ऊ आफ्नो बाटो लाग्छ।     

बाइबलले यो बोलावटलाई परमेश्वरीय गोठालोपनसँग दाँजेको छ।  शब्दावलीमा नै यो स्पस्ट हुन्छ।  पुरानो नियममा परमेश्वरलाई ‘गोठालो’ भनी सम्बोधन गर्दा बस्तुभाउको हेरचाहा गर्ने मानिसको लागि प्रयोग हुने हिब्रू सब्द ‘रा-आ’ चलाइएको छ भने नयाँ नियममा ग्रिक सब्द ‘पोइमेन्’।  यसै शब्दबाट ‘पास्टर’ शब्दको उत्पत्ती भएको हो। कयिनले आफ्नो भाइ हाबिलको हत्यागरेपछि परमेश्वर उसलाई हप्काएर सोध्‍नुहुन्छ, “तेरो भाइ खोइ?”  आफ्नो कर्तव्यमा चुकेको दोषी हृदयबाट कयिनले जबाफ दिन्छ, “के म मेरो भाइको गोठालो हुँ र?” (उत्पत्ती ४.९)।  हो, परमेश्वर कयिनलाई भन्दै हुनुहुन्थ्यो कि ऊ आफ्नो भाइको गोठालो हुनुपर्नेथियो तर सत्रु भएर निस्क्यो। 

मानिस आफ्नो भाइको गोठालो हुन नसक्‍ने देखेर परमेश्वर आफै मानिसको गोठालो हुनुभयो।  योसेफका दाजुहरूले उनीप्रति कयिनकै व्यवहार गरे तर परमेश्वरले उनको हेरचाहा गर्नुभएको तथ्यलाई उल्लेख गर्दै वृद्ध याकूब भन्छन् “ती गोठाला” (याकूबका परमशक्तिशाली परमेश्वर) योसेफको साथमा नभएकोभए उनी पहिल्यै नष्ट भैसक्थे (उत्पत्ती ४९.२३-२४)।  परमेश्वर योसेफको गोठालो हुनुभएको कारण नत उनलाई दाजुहरूले नास गर्नसके न मिश्रको दुःखले। 

याकूबका सन्तानलाई मिश्रबाट परमेश्वरले गोठालोले झैं डोर्‍याएर प्रतिज्ञाको देशमा ल्याउनुभयो।  इज्राएलको महान राजा दाऊद आफै एक गोठालो भएको कारण उनले परमेश्वरको गोठालोपनलाई आफ्नो जीवनमा प्रत्यक्ष अनुगभव गरेका थिए र भन्छन्, “परमेप्रभु मेरो गोठालो हुनुहुन्छ” (भजन.२३.१) र “हामी उहाँका खर्कका भेडाहरू हौं” (भजन.९५.६-७)।

परमेश्वरको गोठालोपनलाई स्वीकार गर्दै प्रभु येशूले भन्नुभयो, “म असल गोठालो हुँ” (यूहन्ना १०.११)।  आफू पिताकहाँ जानुअघि पत्रुसलाई यो गोठालोपनको जिम्मा दिँदै उहाँले भन्नुभयो, “मेरा पाठा (भेडा)हरूलाई खुवाउ र हेरचाहा गर” (यूहन्ना २१.१५-१७)।  जब पत्रुसको संसार छोड्नेबेला आयो तब आफू पछिका सेवकहरूलाई गोठालोको जिम्मा कसरी निर्वाह गर्नुपर्छ भन्दै उनी भन्छन्, “तिमीहरूको रेखदेखमा राखिएको परमेश्‍वरका बगालको हेरचाह गर।  करले होइन तर स्‍वेच्‍छाले, धनको लोभले होइन तर उत्‍साहसाथ, तिमीहरूको जिम्‍मामा रहेकाहरूमाथि अधिकार जमाएर होइन, तर बगालको निम्‍ति उदाहरण भएर।  र जब मूल गोठालो प्रकट हुनुहुनेछ, तब तिमीहरूले महिमाको नओइलाउने मुकुट प्राप्‍त गर्नेछौ” (१पत्रुस ५.२-४)।       

त्यसकारण हामी भन्न सक्छौं कि बाइबलीय प्रकाश अनुसार बगालका (स्थानीय मण्डली) पाठा र भेडाहरूलाई खुवाउनु र तिनीहरूको हेरचाहा गर्नु पास्टरका मुख्य जिम्मेवारीहरू हुन्।  यसै सन्दर्भमा आज मलाई मेरा पास्टर मित्रहरूलाई प्रश्‍न सोध्‍न मनलागेकोछ कि के हामीले यी जिम्मेवारीहरू पूरा गरिरहेका छौं त?  के हामी आफ्नो मण्डलीका विश्वासीहरूलाई सन्तुलित आत्मिक भोजन खुवाउन सफल भएका छौं?  परमेश्वरको बचनबाट खँदिलो आत्मिक भोजन खुवाइएका विश्वासीहरूले मात्रै मण्डलीलाई मजबुत बनाउनुका साथै समाजमा सकरात्मक प्रभाव पार्नसक्छन्।     

पहिलो प्रश्‍न छ उठ्नसक्छ कि विश्वासीलाई खँदिलो भोजन कसरी खुवाउने?  प्रत्येक मण्डलीका आफ्नै प्रकारका शिक्षा र संगति दिने तरिकाहरू हुन्छन्।  साप्‍ताहिक सेवा देखि घरेलु सङ्गतिमा वचनको सेवा र शिक्षा दिइन्छ।  तर त्यसमा सबै भन्दा महत्वपूर्ण क्षेत्र हो साप्‍ताहिक सेवाको समयमा गरिने वचन प्रचार।  हो, हप्‍तामा एक पटक ३० मिनट जति गरेको वचन प्रचारले सायद पूर्ण आत्मिक खुराक पुग्दैन होला तर यो बिनाको अन्य शिक्षामुलक गितविधि र सङ्गतिको प्रभाव न्यून हुनजान्छ।  मण्डलीको साप्‍ताहिक सेवामा पास्टरले प्रभावकारी वचन प्रचार गर्दछ भने त्यो मण्डलीका विश्वासीहरूमा बाइबलप्रतिको मोहमा वृद्धि हुन्छ, परमेश्वरप्रतिको समर्पणमा गहिराइ आउँदछ र चर्चप्रतिको दाइत्वमा सक्रियताको विकास हुन्छ।  तर पास्टरको साप्‍ताहिक प्रचारमा प्रभावकारीताको कमि भएकोखण्डमा विश्वासीहरूमा भएको जोस र उत्तेजना सेलाउँदै जान्छ। 

दोस्रो प्रश्न के छ भने, कस्तो किसिमको वचन प्रचारगर्ने शैलीले विश्वासीमा जोस र उमङ्ग हाल्नुकासाथै आत्मिक परिपक्‍वता ल्याउन सक्छ होला?  गवाही, सपना, दर्शन, चङ्गाई जस्ता व्यक्तिगत अनुभवमा आधारित प्रचारगर्ने शैली नै नेपाली मण्डलीमा चल्दै आएको चलन हो।  हरेक हप्‍ता कुन वचन र के विषयमा प्रचार गर्ने भनी पास्टरले निर्णय गर्नुपर्ने हुन्छ।  यस्तो अवस्थामा पास्टरलाई जे मन लाग्यो त्यो वियष र उसलाई मन परेका बाइबलका पदहरू मात्रै प्रचारीने भएको कारण विश्वासीहरूमा बाइबलीय प्रकाशको अनिकाल पर्दछ र आत्मिक कुपोषणका सिकार बन्दछन्।  त्यसैकारण यो लेखबाट म मेरा पास्टर मित्रहरूलाई यो प्रेरणा दिन चाहन्छु कि हाम्रा विश्वासीहरूमा आत्मिक तागत ल्याउने हो भने हामीले बाइबल प्रचार गर्नु आवश्यक छ।  अर्थात, हामीले आफ्नो सोचबाट प्रचार गर्ने विषय छान्नुको सट्टा बाइबलको कुनै पुस्तक वा अध्यायलाई जस्ताको त्यस्तै प्रचार गर्न सक्‍नुपर्छ।  उत्पत्ती देखि प्रकाशको पुस्तक सम्मै क्रमबद्ध तरिकाले प्रचार गर्नसके झनै राम्रो!  पुरै बाइबल प्रचार गर्न सक्‍ने सम्भावना नभएको खण्डमा समय र परिस्थिति सुहाउँदो खण्ड वा पुस्तकलाई छानेर प्रचार गर्दा परमेश्वरको वचनले जुनप्रकारको परिवर्तन चाहेको छ त्यो विश्वासीहरूमा उत्पन्न हुनजान्छ।  बाइबलको सर्वाङ्गीण ज्ञान र चौतर्फी आत्मिक विकासको लागि यो प्रचारशैली निकै प्रभावकारी रहेको कुरा इतिहासले प्रमाण दिएको छ।  मण्डलीको इतिहासमा र आज पनि प्रायः सबै प्रभावशाली पास्टरहरूले यसै शैलीलाई अपनाएको देखिन्छ।  यो प्रचारविधिलाई अङ्ग्रेजीमा ‘एक्सपोजिटरि प्रिचिङ्’ भनिन्छ जसको मतलब हो; बाइबललाई चाकलाग्दो तरिकाले जस्ताको त्यस्तै मानिसका सामु छर्लङ्ग पार्नु।  जब परमेश्वरको वचन मानिसका सामु छर्लङ्ग हुन्छ तब त्यो वचनले उनीहरूमा ईश्वरीय परिवर्तन ल्याउँदछ।  प्रचारकको चटकीले, गवाहीले र चमत्कारले केही समयको लागि विश्वासीमा उत्तेजना ल्याउनसक्छ तर दिर्घकालीन परिवर्तन ल्याउन सक्दैन।  मानिसको दिर्घकालीन जीवन परिवर्तन र आत्मिक सशक्तिकरणको लागि परमेश्वरको लिखित वचनलाई पास्टरले हप्‍तैपिच्छे गरिने प्रचारबाट जीवित वचनमा परिणत गर्न सक्‍नु पर्दछ।

अर्को प्रश्न पनि गर्नै पर्ने हुन्छ कि कस्तो पास्टरले सफलतापूर्वक ‘एक्सपोजिटरि’ प्रचार गर्नसक्छ?  आजको परिवेशमा धेरैलाई यो प्रश्नको जवाफ मन पर्दैन होला कारण अधिकाङ्स नेपाली मण्डलीका पास्टरहरू ‘थियोलोजिकल’ (ईश्वरसास्त्रीय) शिक्षालाई महत्व दिँदैनन्।  ‘थियोलोजिकल’ शिक्षाप्रति उहाँहरूमा देखिएको वितृष्णाको कारण सायद कतिपय बाइबल विद्वानहरूले मण्डलीप्रति देखाएको नकरात्मक उदाहरणहरू पनि हुनसक्छन्।  तापनि, आज भन्दा झण्डै एकसय वर्ष पहिलाका बाइबल तथा वचन प्रचार सम्बन्धिका विद्वान ह्यारोल्ड नटले आफ्नो महत्वपूर्ण पुस्तकमा ठोकेरै भनेका छन् कि “अशिक्षित पास्टरले ‘एक्सपोजिटरि’ प्रचार गर्न सक्दैन”।[1]  उनका अनुसार सफल ‘एक्सपोजिटरि’ प्रचारकको जीवनमा निम्‍न चारवटा गुणहरू नभइ हुँदैन;  

१)   Good General Education (संसारिक ज्ञानमा शिक्षित): येशूले भन्नुभयो “तिमीहरू संसारमा छौ तर संसारका होइनौ”।  प्रभावकारी बाइबलीय प्रचारको लागि पास्टरसँग आफ्नो संसारको ज्ञान हुनु अत्यन्त आवस्यक छ।  भूगोल, इतिहास, मानवसास्त्र, मनोविज्ञान, विज्ञान, मनोरञ्जन, कला, साहित्य, दर्शन, अर्थ, राजनीति आदि जस्ता मानव जीवनमा असर गरिरहेका पक्षहरूको बारेमा आधारभूत ज्ञान बिनाको प्रचारकले आफ्ना विश्वासीहरूको जीवनमा बाइबललाई जीवन्त बनाउन सक्दैन।   

२)  Good Bible Training (बाइबलमा तालिम प्राप्‍त): जसरी संसारको ज्ञान हुनु आवस्यक छ त्यसरी नै उक्त पास्टरले बाइबलको ज्ञानमा पनि पोख्तता हासिल गरेको हुनै पर्छ।  बाइबलका पानाहरूमा के छ र के भन्न खोजिएको छ?  प्रत्येक पुस्तकमा के छ र कसरी उल्था गर्ने?  पुरानो नियमकोलागि हिब्रू भाषा र नयाँ नियमकोलागि ग्रिक भाषाको न्यूनतम् ज्ञान र कसरी शाब्दिक अर्थ लाउन सकिन्छ भनी आधारभूत तालिम लिएकै हुनुपर्छ।  त्यसकासाथै बाइबलको संसार कस्तो थियो र त्यो संसारलाई आजको संसारसँग कसरी जोड्न सकिन्छ भनि तालिम प्राप्‍त गरेकै हुनुपर्छ।  यदि यसरी बाइबल सम्बन्धि तालिम लिएको छैन भने उसको प्रचारमा अर्थको अनर्थ पनि भैरहेको हुनसक्छ।  प्रायजसो ‘थियोलोजिकल’ शिक्षाको विरोध गर्ने पास्टरहरूको प्रचारमा बाइबलीय यथार्थ नभएर आफ्नै मनगढन्ते अर्थहरू लगाइएको देखिन्छ।  थाहा नपाउनु वा ज्ञान नहुनु एउटा पास्टरको लागि घातक हुनजान्छ कारण उसको मण्डलीमा उपस्थित बुद्धिजीवीवर्गले उसलाई पत्याउन छोड्नेछन् ।  पास्टरको शैक्षिक स्तरले उसको मण्डलीको शैक्षिक स्तरलाई निर्धारण गर्दछ।

३)  Good Studious Habits (अध्ययनशील): संसार सम्बन्धि आवस्यक ज्ञान र बाइबलमा तालिम प्राप्‍त व्यक्ति बन्नको लागि विश्वविध्यालयमा गएर औपचारिक शिक्षा हासिल गर्नै पर्छ भन्ने छैन।  गर्न सके राम्रो।  तर कुनै मानिस ज्ञानी र अज्ञानी बन्नको लागि उसको सिक्‍ने इच्छा र आदतमा भर पर्दछ।  पास्टरमा दैनिक अध्ययन गर्ने बानी छैन भने ऊ मण्डलीको पास्टर हुन योग्यको मानिस होइन।  अध्ययन नगर्ने मानिसले बाइबलीय प्रचार गरेर आफ्ना मानिसलाई आत्मिक खुराक खुवाउन सक्दैन।  यो असम्भव छ।  त्यसैकारण पास्टरले पैसा र पदको लोभमा अध्ययन र चिन्तनलाई छोडेर बिभिन्न संघ-संस्थामा धाउन थालेको खण्डमा उसको मण्डलीमा वचनको अनिकाल पर्नेछ।  प्रचार गर्दा पनि केवल उसको मनमा लागेका र उठेका विचारहरूलाई पोखाउनेछ वा अरूले गरेको प्राचारलाई चोरी गरेर विश्वासीको आँखामा छारो हाल्नेछ।  यसरी पोखाइएका विचारहरू जीवन दिने परमेश्वरको वचनको विकल्प हुन सक्दैनन्।  बाइबलको कुनै खण्ड वा पुस्तकबाट इमानदार प्रचार गर्न पास्टरले त्यो खण्डमा निकै मेहेनतका साथ अध्ययन, मनन्, प्रार्थना र तयारी गरेकै हुनुपर्छ।    

४)  Good Oratorical Skill (कुशल वक्तृत्वकला): संसारको ज्ञान, बाइबलको तालिम र अध्ययनशील पास्टरले अर्को मेहेनत गर्नुपर्ने क्षेत्र हो वक्तृत्वकला।  आफूसँग भएको परमेश्वरीय प्रकाशलाई प्रभावकारी ढङ्गले मानिसको जीवनमा हस्तान्तरण गर्न पास्टरले आफ्नो प्रचार गर्ने कलालाई विकसित गर्नै पर्छ।  साधारण विषयलाई पनि कुशल वक्ताले चाखलाग्दो तरिकाले प्रस्तुत गरेको खण्डमा स्रोताको जीवनमा गहिरो छाप पर्न जान्छ तर अकुशल वक्ताले गम्भिर विषयलाई पनि दिक्‍कलाग्दो बनाउँछ।  पास्टरको प्रचार दिक्‍कलाग्दो हुनुहुँदैन।  कुशल वक्ता बन्न अध्यन र अभ्यास दुबै चाहिन्छन्।   

पास्टरको जीवनमा यी चारवटा गुणहरूले ठाउँ पाएको छ र पवित्र आत्माको अगुवाईमा ऊ चल्ने मानिस हो भने उसको जिम्मामा रहेको बगाललाई कहिल्यै पनि वचनको अनिकाल पर्ने छैन।  पास्टरको प्रचारमा परमेश्वरीय प्रकाश हुनेछ र त्यसले विश्वासीको जीवनमा परिवर्तन ल्याउनेछ।  वचनको अनिकाल नपरेको मण्डलीमा संख्यात्मक र गुणात्मक वृद्धि हुनेछ र विश्वासीहरू आत्मिक, भौतिक, बौद्धिक र भावनात्मकरूपमा स्वस्थ रहनेछन्।  पास्टर आफैलाई पनि वचन प्रचारको भारले थिचिएको हुने छैन कारण ऊ आफ्नो विचारबाट होइन तर बाइबलले दिएको खण्डबाट बोल्ने भएको कारण उसले नयाँ विषयहरू खोजिरहनु पर्दैन। 

चाखलाग्दो र प्रभावकारी बाइबलीय प्रचारको माध्यमबाट हामी आफ्नो जिम्मामा दिइएका बगालको सजिलैसँग पालनपोषण र हेरचाह गर्न सक्‍नेछौं।  तर आफ्नो सिमित मानवीय अनुभव र मनपर्ने बाइबलका खण्डबाट मात्रै प्रचार गर्छौं भने हामीले विश्वासीलाई धोका दिइरहेका ठहरिनेछौं।

How Do You Pray For Your Wife?

My wife and I live with my mother-in-law in a small village in the outskirt of Guwahati.  We have a small cottage in this peaceful village where my wife often keeps herself busy in the garden and I am busy either with books or with computer.  

Internet connection and electricity are our greatest nemeses.  Television died nearly a year ago and hasn’t come back to life yet.  

The weather has been dry for sometimes now and my wife’s garden is turning into an arid land.  However, the plants and flowers she had planted earlier have been enjoying a great flourishing.  
This afternoon, I went out to see what she was doing and found these. 

Every time I visit my wife’s garden, I remember how I used to pray for my future wife…and then I met her, and then I married her.  But I still continue to pray the same prayer.  This prayer comes from Psalms 128 where it says, “Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table.  Yes, this will be the blessing for the man who fears the LORD” (128:3-4).

It is amazing to see God fulfilling his promises and blessing me by answering my prayer.  Whatever my wife touches, it flourishes and she has truly become a fruitful vine within my house and for my life and ministry.  My life, my home and my ministry would not have been what they are today without this amazing lady.  My children turned out to be beyond my imagination with great potentials.  Indeed, God is able to do immeasurably more than what we can ask or imagine! 

How do you pray for your wife/husband and children?  I tell you, if you would pick up God’s amazing promises and pray and believe accordingly, your family will never disappoint you!

घमण्डी भन्दा नम्र मानिसको जीवन सुखमय हुन्छ।

मानिसको जीवनलाई बाइबलले घाँस र फूलसँग तुलाना गरेको छ।  घाँस छोटो समयमा मौलाउँछ र फूल पनि छिटै फुल्छन् तर ती सबै एकै ऋतुमा सिद्दिएर जान्छन् (भजनसंग्रह १०३.१५-१६)।  अर्को ठाउँमा बाइबलले यसलाई तुवाँलोसँग पनि दाँजेको छ; 
“‘आज वा भोलि हामी फलानो सहरमा जाऔंला, त्‍यहाँ एक वर्ष बिताऔंला र व्‍यापार गरेर नाफा गरौंला’ भन्‍नेहरू अब सुन, भोलि के हुने हो तिमीहरू जान्‍दैनौ।  तिम्रो जिन्‍दगी के छ? तिमीहरू त तुवाँलो हौ, जो केही बेरको निम्‍ति देखा पर्छ, अनि हराइहाल्‍छ।  यसको सट्टामा त तिमीहरूले यसो भन्‍नुपर्ने, ‘यदि परमेश्‍वरको इच्‍छा भयो भने हामी बाँचौंला र यस्‍तो-उस्‍तो गरौंला'" (याकूब ४.१३-१५)।  यो छोटो जीवनलाई परमेश्वरको इच्छा अनुसार चल्न दिएमा घाँसको जस्तै हरियाली र फूलको जस्तै सुन्दरताले यसलाई छोड्ने छैन।

हो, जीवन छोटो छ।  कुनै पनि बेला यो टुङ्गिन सक्छ, तुवाँलो जस्तै हराउनसक्छ।  तापनि बाइबलकै मापदण्डलाई स्वीकार गर्ने हो भने मानिसको आयु परमेश्वरले ७० वा ८०वर्षको सेरोफेरोमा निर्धारित गरेको छ (भजनसंग्रह ९०.१०)।  कुनै अप्रिय घटना नघटेमा र प्राणघातक रोग नलागेमा हामी मध्य धेरैले आफ्नो ८०को दशकलाई छुनेछौं।  मानवीय नजरले हेर्दा यात्रा लामो नै छ।  यो लामो यात्रामा हामीलाई परमेश्वरको इच्छा, अनुग्रह, अगुवाई र सहयोग आवस्यक छ। 

तर मानिस कति घमण्डी छ।  शरीरमा स्वास्थ्य र हातमा सम्पत्ति हुन्जेल उसलाई कोही चाहिँदैन र कसैसँग ऊ झुक्‍नु पर्दैन।  उल्टै मानिसहरू उसैलाई पुज्न जान्छन् कारण सबैले बलेकै आगो ताप्छन्।  हितोपदेश १९.४ले भन्छ “धनले धेरै मित्र बनाउँछ, तर गरीब मानिसको मित्रले उसलाई त्याग्छ”।  शक्ति र सम्पत्ति भएको मानिसले मुर्ख कुरा बोल्दा पनि ज्ञानीको मुखबाट निस्केको वाणी जस्तै गरी स्वार्थी मानिसहरू त्यसलाई स्वीकार गर्दछन् तर गरीबले बोलेको माहावाणी पनि कसैले सुन्दैन।  यो संसारमा गरीबको लागि जीवन निकै कष्टकर हुनसक्छ भने धनीको लागि मनपरी।

 

गरीबको लागि जीवनको यात्रा लामो छ र गाह्रो पनि छ।  त्यसैकारण गरीबलाई ईश्वरीय सहायताको आवस्यकता छ।  जीवनमा अती नै दुःख आइपरको खण्डमा जसरी शक्ति र सम्पन्नताले मानिसलाई परमेश्वरबाट अलग गर्नसक्छ त्यसरी नै दुःखले पनि मानिसलाई परमेश्वरबाट अलग गर्न सक्छ; परमेश्वरको भलाइमाथि उसले सङ्खा गर्न थाल्छ।  त्यसैकारण येशूले भन्नुभयो, “गरीबहरूलाई सुसमाचार सुनाउन परमेश्वरले मलाई अभिषेक गर्नुभयो” (लूका ४.१८)।  धेरै पटक बाइबलमा परमेश्वरले आफूलाई “अनाथ र विधवाको परमेश्वर” भनी चिनाएको छ। 

समस्या गरीबको लागि मात्रै होइन, सशक्त र सम्पन्न व्यक्ति पनि यो ७० वा ८०वर्ष लामो यात्रामा अचानक आफैलाई अशक्त र विपन्न भएको अवस्थामा पाउन सक्छ।  आज सबै ठिक छ भन्दैमा सधैं ठिक रहनेछ भनी कसैले निश्चयता दिन सक्दैन कारण आँखिर मानिसको जीवन घाँस, फूल र तुवाँलो जस्तो त हो।  कुनै पनि बेला जो कोही पनि अशक्त र विपन्न बन्न सक्छ।  यी सबै कुराहरूलाई विचार गरेर दाउद भन्छन् “मानिस के हो, र तपाईं उसको वास्था गर्नुहुन्छ?” (भजन.८:४), मोशा भन्छन् “हामीलाई हाम्रा दिन गन्न सिकाउनु होस्” (भजन.९०.१२)। 

त्यसकारण “म यस्तो गर्नेछु, त्यस्तो गर्नेछु” भन्नुको सट्टा “परमेश्वरको इच्छा भए म यस्तो गर्नेछु, त्यस्तो गर्नेछु” भन्नु असल हुन्छ (याकूब ४.१५)।  संसारमा सबै कुराहरू परिवर्तनशील छन् तर परमेश्वर अपरिवर्तनशील हुनुहुन्छ।  उहाँको प्रेम पनि अपरिवर्तनशील छ।  उहाँले हामीलाई अनन्त प्रेमले प्रेम गर्नुभएको छ।  कलवरी क्रूशमा येशूले हाम्रो लागि यति महान काम गर्नुभएको छ कि त्यसको पूर्ण वयान हाम्रो मानव दिमागले गर्न सक्दैन।  तर जब हामी हम्रो इच्छालाई परमेश्वरको इच्छाको अधिनमा हुन दिन्छौं तब त्यो महान कार्यका केही अङ्शहरूलाई हामी नजिकबाट अनुभव गर्नसक्छौं।  एक अनुभवले अर्को अनुभवको गहिराइतिर हामीलाई डोर्‍याउँदछ। 

नम्र मानिसले मात्रै “मेरो इच्छा होइन, तपाईंको इच्छा पूरा होस्” भनेर परमेश्वरलाई भन्न सक्छ।  परमेश्वरको इच्छालाई आफ्नो इच्छा बनाउने मानिसको जीवनमा चिन्ताले बास बस्न पाउँदैन कारण उसलाई थाहा हुन्छ कि सबै कुरा परमेश्वरको अधिनमा छन्।  उसको जीवनमा सुख होस् वा दुःख, खासै फरक पर्दैन।  मानिसले उसलाई वा उसकोबारेमा के भन्छन् त्यसले पनि उसलाई कुनै असर गर्दैन।  उसको यात्राका पाइलाहरू अघि बढी नै रहेका हुन्छन्।  विगतलाई बिर्सदै र वर्तमानलाई अगाल्दै ऊ भविस्यतिर लम्की रहन्छ।  उसलाई सङ्खा छैन कि प्रत्यक नयाँ वर्षले यो संसारको यात्रालाई छोट्याउँदै गैरहेकोछ र एक दिन ऊ समयको घेराबाट अनन्त संसारमा प्रवेस गर्नेछ।

त्यो स्वर्गीय गन्तब्यमा नपुगुन्जेल उसलाई परमेश्वरले जे अह्राउनु हुन्छ ऊ त्यो गर्छ, जहाँ पठाउनुहुन्छ ऊ त्यहाँ जान्छ।  यो संसारमा ऊ सफल होस् वा विफल, उसलाई त्यसले कुनै असर गर्दैन कारण उसले आफ्नो हैन परमेश्वरको उद्देस्य पूरा गरिरहेको हुन्छ।  उसको सेरोफेरोमा रहेका मानिसहरूले पनि परमेश्वरीय जीवनको स्वाद पाउँदछन्।  उसको परिवारीक वातावरण रहरलाग्दो हुन्छ।  छरछिमेकमा उसलाई चिन्नेहरूले सामनेमा नभए पनि पिठ्युँ पछाडि उसको आदर गरिरहेका हुन्छन् कारण उसको जीवन जीउनेशैली निकै आकर्षक हुन्छ; उसमा स्वर्गीय चरित्रले बास गरेको हुन्छ।

परमेश्वरको इच्छाअनुसार चल्ने मानिसलाई भजनसंग्रह १२८ले भन्छ कि उसले आफ्नो परिश्रमको फल खानेछ, आशिषित् र फलिफाप हुनेछ, उसको श्रीमती फलवन्त दाखको लताजस्तै, छोरा-छोरी जैतूनका मुनाहरूजस्तै हुनेछन्, र उसले आफ्ना नाति-पनाति देख्‍न पाउनेछ।

त्यसकारण मित्र, बाइबलको परमेश्वको इच्छा अनुसार जीवन बिताएको खण्डमा यो छोटो जीवनमा पनि हामीले परमेश्वरका सम्पूर्ण आशिष् र तोकिएका दिनहरूलाई उत्तम तरिकाले अनुभव गर्न पाउनेछौं।

Life is a Mixture of Joy and Sorrow

This blogpost was originally published on my Xanga site on November 16, 2008.  Xanga was my first blogging experience.  It was a wonderful site in which I had made so many friends and published quite a bit.  Sadly, Xanga went under water and so went my precious memories along with it.

The other day, I was able to retrieve the following post with the help of Facebook as I had shared this particular link.  This post is full of memories...and I am republishing it as it was without any edits.  Yes, so much has changed since then....life is not the same anymore....never imagined that one day I would be re-posting this entry from Guwahati ...but the memories are precious...hope you enjoy it!

Our journey began from the domestic airport in Kathmandu.  But the boys were beginning to ask "when are we gonna reach?" even before boarding the plane.

After 40 minutes in the sky, this white bird left us at the border and our real journey to Northeast began in earnest.  The overnight bus ride from Siliguri to Guwahati was a terrible nightmare.

As we arrived in Guwahati, we were excited to meet the third sister's family (my wife is the eldest of the four).  The youngest also is married to a Nepali pastor.  It has been a long time we had not seen each other.  

The next day we were united with the second sister's family.  They could not bring any of their four children.  Second sister is in the yellow and her husband is right behind her with a black jacket.  Goulal is joined by his brother Alex and behind me is the pastor from the local church (father-in-law began 25 years ago).

The wedding day; this was the gate of Guwahati Baptist Church that was shattered by the bomb blast after two days of the wedding.  If it had been two days earlier, many of us would not be here and so would be the wedding.  Sadly, many from the church died and the pastor was also injured.

Maid of honor decided to hide her face!  It was good wedding, about four hundred people came to bless the couple.

After the wedding, we headed to Manipur.  This is my father-in-law's house.   The mountain behind is hours away but looks so close.

It was good to see my wife laugh as they used to when they were small...this is Hekim, the second sister.  I thought my wife is the only one with such a great laughter but Hekim won.  We made so much noise in that neighborhood.

 
She is a great mother! She has gone through so many ups and downs but the Lord has been with her in all of that.  She saw her nest get emptied one by one and finally; husband suffered multiple strokes, leaving him completely immobile.  100% he needs her for survival.  With all the storms of life, the smile and the laughter is still there at this age.  My wife still wishes she was as tall as her mother!

Mother has to lift him up and put in this chair, then she will push the chair to the front porch where father will watch people passing by the road in front of the house.  He was a great man, a great husband, a great father and is still fighting for his life and has not lost the battle.  

This was the first time Martin saw his grandpa after the stroke.  The first night, he just could not stop crying because when he was small, the grandparents were with us in Kathmandu and he was so fond of his grandpa.  He was hoping that he will make his grandpa proud by all that he had to tell him.  Sadly, grandpa cannot talk more than few words at a time.  But from the next day they were getting along well and Martin had accepted the situation.

These two are wonderful men that I call my brothers...actually I took my advantage of marrying the eldest one so that I did not have to work in the kitchen as they!!!!  Mangcha is a High School teacher.  He has two beautiful sons; one is already in the college.  He also is a deacon of a very large church in Motbung, Manipur.  They are a wonderful family.  

Ivulo is from Nagaland.  He is a civil servant, serving in the Irrigation department of India as the senior Engineer and officer.  They have four wonderful children and the eldest is in the Bible College, preparing for the ministry.

This is the church father-in-law started.  As the chieftain of the village, he provided the land and everything needed for the church.  Sadly, after his sickness, he is unable to develop it.  There are more than 250 members.  I had the privilege of ministering three times.  The church atmosphere is so different than what we are used to in Nepal.  Everyone lives nearby and when they hear the bell ring, they all come to the church.  Church plays the central role in daily life of the community.

When we were there, this church celebrated the silver Jubilee.  Because father could not attend, as the founders, mother gave a short speech.

November 7 was Martin's Birthday, but our journey did not allow us to celebrate it...so we had it after we arrived home in Kathmandu a few days later.  Sister Bimala and her daughter Esther and Krishna were with us.

What Happens When We Trust God?

The most powerful nation on earth has a motto that reads “In God We Trust”. Out of the ashes of the civil war, this nation longed for some sense of hope and stability.  Though the civil war was fought in and around the issue of slavery but the overriding issue was that of economy.  End of slavery meant, end of workforce for the landlords and plantation owners.  In a time like that, this comforting motto first appeared on the coin (money) of the United States in 1864 indicating where the nation’s hope should be anchored.  Nearly a century later in 1956, President Eisenhower approved this motto into a law passed by the US Congress to provide a calming assurance from the looming danger of communism and a new kind of imperialism hiding behind the shadow of cold war.  The congress insert at that time reads: “In these days when imperialistic and materialistic communism seeks to attack and destroy freedom, it is proper to remind all of us of this self-evident truth that as long as this country trusts in God, it will prevail”. Such a timely wisdom of the leadership at that time to recognize the human limitations in governing the affairs of a nation has stood the test of time.  Today this nation reaps the reward of its leaders’ faithfulness and commitment to the faith once handed to them by their forefathers. 

God said to Moses in the second commandment that he will punish the children for the sins of their fathers until the fourth generation but he will show love and kindness to the children of the righteous for a thousand generations (Ex. 20:1-6).  Psalms 33:12 says “blessed is the nation whose God is Yahweh”. In spite of the carnality and heathenism coming out of America, this nation still has a divine hedge built around it because God is ever faithful to his promises made in covenant with his children.  The carnal children of the US still benefit from the faithfulness of their forefathers because their forefathers chose to trust God and left behind a blessing for a thousand generations.

As a citizen of a nation like Nepal that has rebelled against God, what hope do I have?  What blessings can I claim from my forefathers who broke the very first and second commandments of God by worshipping the creation instead of the creator? Not only that, the first book of the Bible is called ‘Genesis’, which means ‘beginnings’.  In the beginning of this book, Satan is represented by a snake that deceived the first man.  Bible also tells that Satan fell from heaven because he refused to worship God; he wanted to be like God and demanded the angelic beings to worship him.  But God cast him down and replaced him by creating man.  Thus, we see him in the book of Genesis chapter three as a snake and today there is no household in Nepal (except Christians and Muslims) on whose doorpost they do not post a picture of a snake.  Every year on Nag-panchami (Day of the snake god), the old snake pictures are replaced with the new ones.  These snake posters are pasted on the top horizontal bar of the door frame so that when a person goes out of the house, the head has to be bent down to worship the snake and the same thing when one enters the house.  Traditionally, the doors in a Nepali house are slightly shorter than the average height of a person so that one has to bend the head to enter in and out of the house.  Therefore, the best place to put the picture of a snake god.  

Bible symbolizes snake as evil.  When God wanted to deliver the people of Israel from their Egyptian bondage; the blood of the lamb (symbolizes the blood of Jesus Christ) was put on the doorpost for deliverance from bondage to freedom.  Today, every household in Nepal replaces the blood of the lamb with the symbol of a snake.  What blessings can we hope from a snake?  The communist government might be able to bring economic prosperity (assuming it does) but this economic prosperity might come with a high price of peace and freedom.  In their pursuit of power, the communists will not hesitate to kill any number of people and once they have the power, there will be no liberty left for the common man.  Religious freedom and free expression of thought in social media have already come under attack from this government.  However, because poverty is such a terrible task master, the general public might be happy to live under the political tyranny than the tyranny of poverty. So, there is no hope of a national blessing for Nepal.

But on the individual level, there is hope.  There is hope because God in Jesus Christ had transcended the national, political, religious and ethnic boundaries to bless any person who puts one’s faith in him.  Anyone who accepts Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior becomes free from the curses that came from violating God’s commandments.  Those who are in Christ Jesus become new creation of God (2Cor.5:17).  They are born again and their past is wiped away.  They are free to create a new genealogy of blessing for their posterity.  “Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law…in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to us” (Gal. 3:13-14).  It is God’s will for us to be saved from our sin, healed in our bodies and be blessed in our material life (3John 2).      

The question we have to ask is; have we seen these blessings (spiritual, physical and material) come to us in the last 60+ years of Christian history in Nepal?  The obvious answer is ‘yes’.  But if we look carefully, we see that Nepali church is very good at preaching about salvation from sin and healing from diseases but very poor at teaching about our material blessings.

Christian population comes from the very lower end of social ladder and they have tremendous needs.  But unfortunately, they have not been told by their spiritual leaders how God wants them to come out of poverty; that God can meet their material needs.  Such a lack of teaching may have been due to two possible reasons; one, pastors are afraid to be labeled as prosperity preachers.  Two, they have no experience of God meeting their own needs and thus lack conviction in telling their people that God can indeed meet their material needs.  Missionaries were prohibited to preach the gospel in Nepal.  But they could hire the local citizens for that.  Because of such a combination, the pioneering native pastors did not have to worry for their material needs; missionaries and mission agencies from outside of Nepal became their source of supply.  Pleasing the missionaries and producing colorful mission reports replaced the needed trust in God for their material needs.  Even today Nepali Christian leadership has misled the believers from trusting God for their material blessings by demonstrating that without outside financial help, Nepali church cannot exist.  But, like the motto of the US, if the pioneering leadership had inspired believers to put their trust in God; not only for salvation and healing, but also for material blessings, situation would have been very different.   

Therefore, Nepali believers need to learn to trust God for everything (salvation, healing and prosperity) and carve a new course for their own life and for the life of their posterity.  The God who is able to save them and heal them is also able to meet their material and financial needs.  The spiritual leadership needs to inspire the believers to expect God to lift them out of poverty just as he has lifted them out of sinfulness and sickness.  Thus, Christians individually can be free from the national curse coming from violating God’s commandments because “In God They Trust”.    

दिने व्यक्तिलाई परमेश्वर बिर्सनुहुन्नः अगस्टिनको जीवन।

बाइबल भन्छ मानिस परमेश्वरको स्वरूपमा बनेको प्राणी हो।  सुन्दा नै अचम्म लाग्‍ने।  मानौ मानिस परमेश्वर जस्तै छ।  हो पनि।  संसारमा न कुनै चिज छ न कुनै प्राणी जससँग मानिसको तुलना गर्न सकिन्छ।  बाइबलले भन्छ कि यो भौतिक संसार मानिसकै लागि बनेको हो; “फल्दै-फुल्दै, वृद्धि हुँदै, पृथ्वीमा भरिँदै र त्यसलाई आफ्नो वशमा पार्दैजाओ” (उत्पत्ती १.२८)।  मानिसले आफ्नो वशमा पार्न नसकेका कुराहरू अब थोरै मात्र छन्।

तपानि मानिसले इतिहास वशमा पार्न सकेको छैन।  लाग्छ मानिसको इतिहास परमेश्वर आफैले नयन्त्रण गरिरहनुभएको छ।  आज सम्म उपलब्ध भएका मानवीय ऐतिहासिक प्रमाणहरूले देखाउँछन् कि विगतमा धेरै शक्तिशाली राज्य र साम्राज्यहरू आए अनि गए।  त्यो समयका महान सहरहरू खोज्न आज जमिन उत्खनन् गर्नु पर्छ र आजका महान सहरहरूको पनि एकदिन त्यस्तै अवस्था आउनेछ।

मानव इतिहास मात्रै नभएर, मानिसको व्यक्तिगत जीवनको गति पनि उसको वशमा छैन।  भोलि के हुने हो कसैले भन्न सक्दैन।  आजको दिन र अहिलेको क्षण मात्रै उसको हातमा छ।  तापनि जन्म र मृत्यु, सत्ता र शक्ति, आशा र निराशा, दुःख र सुख मानिसको जीवनका अभिन्न पाटाहरू बनेका हुन्छन् र लाग्छ प्रत्यक व्यक्तिको जीवन पनि परमेश्वरले आफ्नै इच्छा अनुसार नियन्त्रण गरिरहनुभएको छ।  मानिसले चाहेर नत उसले आफ्नो जीवनमा एक दिन थप्न सक्छ न त उसले फुलेको कपाल कालो बनाउन सक्छ (मत्ती ६.२७)।  भनिन्छ जब भेनाजुएलाका पूर्व राष्ट्रपति ह्युगोस चावेस मृथ्युशैयामा थिए तब उनले आफ्नो शैन्य कमान्डरलाई रुँदै भनेका थिए “म मर्न चहान्न, दयागरी मलाई मर्न नदेऊ”।[1]  यो क्रन्दन नै उनको अन्तिम अभिव्यक्ति हुनगयो। मानिसले नचाहे पनि इतिहासले आफ्नो पाना आफै पल्टाउनेछ।

यो घाँस जस्तै छिन मै मौलाउने र छिनमै ओइलाउने जीवनमा पनि अनन्त परमेश्वरको आफ्नो योजना लुकेको हुँदोरहेछ।  बाइबल भन्छ “परमेश्वरको आफ्नै हातले  यी सबै गर्नुभएको हो भनी कसले जान्दैन र?  जीवितहरू सबैका प्राण, सबै मानिस-जातिका आत्मा परमेश्वरकै हातमा छ” (अय्यूब १२.९-१०)।  मानिसको आत्मा मात्रै नभएर उसको शरीर र सबै परिस्थितिहरू पनि परमेश्वरकै हातमा र उहाँकै वशमा हुँदारहेछन् कारण परमेश्वर भन्नुहुन्छ “म तिमीहरूलाई कुनै रीतिले छोड्नेछैनँ, म तिमीहरूलाई त्याग्‍नेछैनँ” (हिब्रू १३.५)।  मावन इतिहासमा आफ्नो नियन्त्रण कायम राख्‍न परमेश्वरले मानिसलाई नै प्रयोग गरेको देखिन्छ।  मानिसको जीवन र वचनबाट परमेश्वरले आफ्नो जीवन र वचन मानव इतिहासमा प्रकाशित गर्दै आउनुभएको तथ्य साधारण व्यक्ति देखि असाधारण व्यक्तित्वको जीवनीले छर्लङ्गै पारेको देखिन्छ। उत्तर अफ्रिकाको हिप्पो सहरबासी अगस्टिनको जीवनी एक यस्तै उदाहरण हो। 

अगस्टिनको जन्म सन् ३५४, अफ्रिकाको थागास्टेबासी साधारण रोमी नागरिक र किसान परिवारमा भएको थियो।  भुमध्यसागरबाट यो सहर झण्डै ७५कि.मि. दक्षिणी पहाडी इलाकामा पर्दथ्यो।  सानै उमेरबाट अगस्टिनमा तीक्ष्ण बुद्धिको लक्षण देखिएको कारण उनका माता-पिताले उनलाई किसानीको लागि नभएर उच्‍चशिक्षाको लागि तयार गर्दै थिए।  दुःखको कुरा अगस्टिन सोह्र वर्षको हुँदा अचानक उनका पिताको निधन भयो र ठुलो सहरमा गएर उच्‍चशिक्षा हाँसिल गर्ने सपना पनि सिद्दियो।  आमा मोनिका र भाइ-बैनीको रेखदेखको जिम्मा जवान अगस्टिनकै काँधमा पर्‍यो जसको कारण चाहेर पनि त्यो सानो सहर थागास्टे छोड्न सक्ने अवस्था उनको थिएन।  उनकी आमा परमेश्वरमा निकै समर्पीत स्त्री थिइन्।  आफ्ना सन्तानको लागि रातदिन आँसु बगाएर प्रार्थनामा लागिनै रहन्थिन्।

आमाको प्रार्थनाको जवाफ नै होला, उनकै एक धनाढ्य गाउँले रोमानियानसले अगस्टिनको त्यो सम्भावनाले भरिएको दिमागलाई खेर गएको देख्‍न सकेनन्।  लाग्‍ने जति सबै खर्च आफैले बेहोर्ने गरी अगस्टिनलाई माडुरोसको विश्वविध्यालयमा उच्‍चशिक्षाको लागि जान अग्रह गरे।  अगस्टिनले पनि “के खोज्छस् … आँखो” भनेझैं, अशिक्षाको अन्धकारबाट उच्‍चशिक्षाको ज्योतिमा जानपाउने मौकालाई चुकाएनन्।  केही वर्षमै सारा उत्तरी अफ्रिकामा एक विशिष्ट विद्वानकोरूपमा उनले आफैलाई खडा गरे।  खेद यति मात्रै थियो कि उनको त्यो अभूतपूर्व सोचमा बाइबलले ठाउँ पाएन।  बाइबलाई अज्ञानीहरूको विचार भन्दै उनी ग्रिक दर्शन र फारसी धार्मिक मत मनिकिएनिजम्का अनुयायी बने जसको कारण आमा मोनिकाको हृदय टुक्रियो।  नौ वर्षसम्म उनले प्रख्यात सहर कार्थेजमा अध्यापन गर्नुकासाथै धेरैलाई बाइबलीय विश्वासबाट अलग गर्दै मनिकिएन मतमा ल्याएर त्यो मतलाई निकै बलियो बनाउन सफल भए।  तापनि रोमी रमझम र फैलिँदै गएको ख्यातिले उनलाई खासै आत्म-सन्तुष्टि दिएन।  यतिबेलासम्म उनकी प्रेमिकाबाट एकजना छोरा पनि जन्मिसकेको थियो। आमाले निरन्तर येशूमा फर्कन गरेको अग्रहको कारण अफ्रिका माहादेशनै छोड्न मन लाग्यो र एक रात आमालाई कार्थेजमा एक्लै छोडेर प्रेमिका र छोरालाई लिएर उनी रोमतिर लागे।  छोराले यसरी एक्लै छोडेर समुन्द्रपार गए पनि मोनिकाले प्रार्थना गर्न छोडिनन्। 

अफ्रिकामा कमाएको ख्यातिको कारण रोममा पनि आफ्नो ख्याति स्थापित गर्न अगस्टिनलाई समय लागेन।  छोटो समयमै उनी रोमी सम्राटका प्रवक्ता बने।  त्यो बेलामा रोमी सम्राट भ्यालिन्टिनिएन मिलान सहरबाट साशन गर्थे र त्यसै सहरमा प्रख्यात विषप आम्ब्रोजले पनि सेवा गर्दथे।  छोरा मिलानमा छ भन्ने खबर सुनेपछि आमा मोनिकाले रोमोको यात्रा सुरु गरिन् कारण उनलाई विषप आम्ब्रोजको वचन सुन्ने धेरै ठूलो चाहना थियो।  आमा मिलान आइपुग्‍नुभन्दा पहिल्यै अगस्टिनको विषप आम्ब्रोजसँग भेट भैसकेको थियो।  पहिलो भेटमै आम्ब्रोजको प्रभावले अगस्टिनलाई बाइबल फेरी पढ्न प्रेरणा मिल्यो।  येशूमा विश्वास नभएपनि विषपको प्रचारगर्ने शैली सारै मनपरेको कारण प्रत्येक हप्ता अगस्टिन चर्चमा जान थाले।

अगस्टिनको जीवनमा विश्वासको ठूलो बाधक उनको तिब्र योन अभिलाषा थियो। एक साँझ साथीहरूसँग पापसँगको संघर्षको बारेमा छलफल गरिसकेपछि उनलाई निकै अशान्ति भयो र घरबाट निस्केर बगैचामा बिलौना गरिरहेको बेला एउटा बालकको आवाज आउँछ “किताबको मुठा खोल र पढ”।  दुई तीन चोटी त्यो आवाज आएपछि उनी भित्र जान्छन् र पहिला पढ्दै गरेको बाइबलको मुठा खोल्छन् र उनको आँखा रोमीको पुस्तक १३:१३-१४मा पर्दछ। अनौठो प्रकाश नै भनौ, त्यो बाइबलको खण्डले अगस्टिनमा भयानक परिवर्तन ल्यायो।  त्यसको केही समयपछि आफ्नो १५ वर्षीय छोरासँगै विषप आम्ब्रोजको हातबाट उनी बप्तिस्मा लिन्छन्। अगस्टिनको ख्याति सुनेर उनका गाउँले र सहयोगी रोमानियानस पनि अफ्रिकाबाट मिलानमा उनलाई भेट्न आउँछन् र भन्छन् “मैले गरेका सबै लगानी तिमी जस्तै फाइदाजनक भैदिएको भए कति राम्रो!”

बप्तिस्मा लिएको केही समयमै उनले सम्राटको सेवाबाट राजीनामा दिन्छन् र आजीवन ब्रह्मचारी रहेर बाइबलको अध्यन र ध्यान गर्ने भन्दै आफ्नी प्रेमिकालाई अफ्रिका फर्काउँछन्। केही वर्षपछि रोम छोडेर उनी आफ्नै गाउँ थागास्टे आउँछन् तर बाटोमै आमाको मृत्युले उनलाई व्याकुल बनाउँछ र थागास्टेमा आफ्नै पुरानो घरमा छोरा आडेओडेटससँग बसेर पहिला मनिकिएनिजममा लागेका मित्रलाई येशूमा फर्काउने प्रयास गर्छन्।  एक दिन अचानक टाउको दुखेर बिस वर्षे छोराको मृत्यु हुन्छ र अगस्टिनको संसार पूर्णरूपले अध्यारो हुनजान्छ। तापनि मनिकिएनिजमको विरुद्द लेखेका लेखको कारण उत्तर अफ्रिकामा उनलाई नचिन्ने मानिस कमै थिए।

एक दिन आफ्नो निराशाको संसारमा केही भिन्नता आउँछ कि भनेर मित्रहरुको सल्लाहामा त्यहाँको प्रख्यात बन्दरगाहाको सहर हिप्पोमा घुम्न जान्छन्। आइतबारको दिन त्यहाँको चर्चमा आराधनाको लागि जाँदा सबैले उनलाई चिनिहाले र हल्लै हल्लाको बिचमा उनलाई चर्चमा पुजाहारी (सेवक) बन्न आग्रह गरिन्छ।  त्यहाँका वृद्ध विषपले अगस्टिनलाई आफ्नो स्थान दिन्छन् र सन् ३९५मा आफ्नो सारा पैतृक सम्पत्ति चर्चलाई दान दिँदै उनी हिप्पोका विषप नियुक्त हुन्छन् जहाँ उनले आफ्नो मृत्युसम्मै, अर्थात सन् ४३०सम्म सेवा गरे।

उनको लामो सेवाकालको समयमा अगस्टिनले लेखेका झण्डै पचास लाख सब्दहरू आज हामीसँग सुरक्षित छन् तर कति नष्ट भएहोलान् भनेर अनुमान मात्रै गर्न सकिन्छ।  मनिकिएनिजम, डोनेटिजम र एरिएनिजम जस्ता घातक झूटाशिक्षाको विरूद्द लेख्‍नुका साथै परमेश्वरको अनुग्रहले एउटा मानिसको जीवनमा कसरी काम गर्छ भन्ने तथ्यलाई प्रमाणित गर्न उनले आफ्नो जीवनी लेखे।  बाइबलका टिप्पणी र उनले गरेका प्रचारहरूलाई पनि उनी सब्दमा परिणत गर्न सफल भए।  जब सन् ४१०मा रोमको पतन भयो तब ख्रीष्टियन विश्वासलाई नै दोष लगाइएको कारण त्यो दोष मेटाउन उनले “परमेश्वरको सहर (सिटि अफ गड)” नामक महान पुस्तक लेखे जसको प्रभाव आज पनि त्यतिनै जीवित छ।  भनिन्छ प्रेरित पावल पछि प्राचीन मण्डलीलाई सम्हाल्न परमेश्वरले अगस्टिनलाई छान्नुभयो।  उनकै लेखहरूको कारण प्राचीन मण्डली मात्रै नभएर पतन भएको रोमी साम्राज्य पनि फेरी मौलाएर आयो। 

एक जना मानिसको जीवनबाट परमेश्वरले यति धेरै काम गर्नु भयो तर मानौ रोमानियानसले समयमै अगस्टिनलाई पढ्नको लागि सहयोग नगरेको भए उनको अवस्था के हुन्थ्यो होला भनेर हामी केवल कल्पना मात्रै गर्न सक्छौ।  त्यसकारण अगस्टिनको महानतामा हामीले उदारवादी रोमानियानस र प्रार्थनामा दिन रात बिताउने उनकी आमा मोनिकालाई बिर्सनु हुँदैन।

सायद अगस्टिन जस्तै माहान काम हाम्रो हातबाट नहुन सक्छ तर रोमानियानस जस्तै हामी कसैलाई केही सहयोग गर्न सक्छौं होला।  मोनिका जस्तै हामी कसैको लागि प्रार्थना गर्न सक्छौं होला।  हुनसक्छ एक दिन हामीले सहयोग गरेको र हामीले प्रार्थना गरेको व्यक्तिलाई परमेश्वरले आफ्नै प्रकारले चलाउनुहुनेछ र हामीले पनि आफ्नो इनाम पाउनेछौं।  परमेश्वरको लागि जति अगस्टिन महत्वपूर्ण छ त्यतिनै रोमानियानस, आम्ब्रोज र मोनिका पनि महत्वपूर्ण छन्।  त्यसकारण मित्र परमेश्वरको राज्यमा हामीले दिएको एक गिलास चिसो पानीको पनि लेखा राखिनेछ कारण परमेश्वरले प्रत्यक मानिसलाई आफ्नो उद्देस्य पुरागर्न उनीहरूको आफ्नै स्थानमा राख्‍नुभएको छ।  कुनै मानिस तिर्खाएर तपाईंको सामु आएको खण्डमा एक गिलास चिसो पानी दिन नबिर्सनुहोला।
