The fateful statement about Solomon in the Bible is
"his wives led him astray" (1 Kings 11:3); a reminiscent of what Eve
did to Adam. If a wife can lead a good
man astray, she can also lead a bad man into the right path. King Lemuel remembers his mother's words
about the virtuous woman in Proverbs 31 where she says "wife of noble
character brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life". It is amazing that such a description of a
woman of noble character comes from the mouth a woman instead of a man. Some say this was possibly Solomon's
description of his own mother Bathsheba, but seems unlikely. When he says "He who finds a wife finds
what is good and receives favor from the Lord" (Prov. 18:22), he may be
reflecting how he had failed to find such a wife even among a thousand women he
could call his wives.
Indeed, to find a good wife is to find God's favor in
life. The woman of noble character has
this amazing God-given ability to turn even a knucklehead man like Nabal to the
right path of some sensibility. The feminine
spirit and motherly instinct combined with godliness can withstand all kinds of
hardships and sufferings to see her family take the right path of prosperity
and peace whereas a worldly minded woman can easily drag any good man into poverty
and ruin.
Solomon the wisest man in the world failed to find such a
wife. The ones he found led him to his
downfall.
O man! If you have a
godly wife, praise her and appreciate her.
Leave your father and mother and cleave to her in order to make a godly
and peaceful home (Matthew 19:5).
