Changeable Colors of Life

Even if someone is born with the silver spoon in the mouth, what one does with that spoon depends very much in that person’s attitude toward life.  The stories of rags to riches are also baked in the oven of one’s attitude.

What we do with our life is entirely in our choosing.  The age old saying “if life hands you a lemon, make a lemonade” will always be a gentle reminder to everyone who might be tempted to complain for what one does not have in life.

26 years ago, my wife and I landed in Kathmandu with a three thousand rupees’ debt to a pastor friend in Siliguri (Indian border town in East Nepal) who borrowed us that money so that we could reach to Kathmandu.  It took us about four months to pay him back.

Financially and otherwise, we could not have imagined more pitiful beginning in this city than what we went through.  However, we never thought ourselves as poor and pitiful.  We knew the God we serve was far more than what most of us have made him up to be.  By faith in the goodness of God, we have survived and thrived for the glory of God.
Today, we took sometime to walk around downtown Kathmandu and the
surrounding alleys.  The density of the houses has made some of those beautiful places unrecognizable.  But it was good to reflect how a city and especially life in the city morphs over time.

As we were walking in Tripureshwor, we were hungry and wanted to find a place to eat.  A few hundred meters away from the junction towards Teku, we saw a Café with the name ‘A Café’; went inside and felt very much peaceful to sit and bite and reflect.  It’s nice and quiet place with a garden, terrace and even a party hall.  Could have been a bit cleaner but considering the dusty city Kathmandu is, we could not complain.  We had a good time.  Taste wasn’t great but the ambience and the surrounding made up for that.

Maybe you are working so hard to make a living, start a ministry, secure a
future or achieve something.  While you do that, don’t forget to live each moment because it’s not going to come back.  Once in a while, don’t forget to stop to appreciate the beauty of the flowers and the mystery of a blue sky.  Don’t forget to spend quality time with your loved ones and friends.

Most of all, don’t forget that the God of the Bible is a loving father who deeply cares for you.  It is his desire to be your shepherd, your savior and your sustainer.  You did not choose him; he chose you.  He does not need your help; you need his help.  When he said, “come to me and I will give you rest”; go to him.  Don’t feel guilty in enjoying the kind of rest he offers you in life.  Serve him with the best of your ability but serve him with joy.  Joy comes when you learn to enjoy every moment he grants you.  Don’t wait to have good time someday in the future.  Have it today because the colors of life are bound to change over time.
